One of the key features of Renewal by Andersen® installation windows is our Fibrex® frame material, which combines the best features of wood and vinyl. In today’s post, we answer frequently questions about this unique material.
1. What is Fibrex made of? Fibrex material is a composite made of wood fibers and polymer. While there are other composites like fiberglass (which is made of polymer and extruded glass fibers), none of them have the strength and durability of wood and the low maintenance requirements of vinyl. Andersen® Corporation started development of Fibrex in 1958 and patented the material in 1991.
2. Are all your window frames made of Fibrex? The short answer is: yes. When Renewal by Andersen was founded as a full-service window replacement company, one of the key decisions was to offer replacement window frames made entirely of Fibrex material. As an extruded composite, Fibrex gives us the capability to build replacement windows with virtually any size, shape, and profile without sacrificing aesthetics and long-term performance. Some of the structural components in our patio doors are also made of Fibrex.
3. How can Fibrex help me save on my utility bills? Our replacement window frames feature a chambered design, which, when combined with the natural insulation of Fibrex, helps slow down thermal transfer through the windows. Together with our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass, our replacement windows help maintain consistent indoor temperatures and reduce indoor heating and cooling requirements. This, in turn, can reduce the workload on your HVAC system and help you save on your energy bills. Our replacement windows are certified by ENERGY STAR® for energy efficiency.
4. Is Fibrex eco-friendly? Yes. At least 40% of the wood fibers used in the Fibrex manufacturing process are made from reclaimed wood trimmings at Andersen’s woodworking facilities. With an expected life span of more than 35 years — far longer than most other replacement window brands — our replacement windows are among the most sustainable building products available. We also have control over our own supply chain, including raw material and logistics, which helps keep our carbon footprint size to a minimum.
