Energy-Efficient Windows: Warmth Through Fall and Winter

Fall is here and temperatures are dropping, meaning you’ll soon be switching on your heat. Dealing with rising heat costs through fall and winter can be a burden. Fortunately, a window replacement can help minimize your heating and cooling expenses.

When replacing your windows, look for products that deliver maximum energy efficiency.

A Look at the Vital Components

So, what makes a window energy-efficient? One important component is the window frame. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends vinyl, wood, fiberglass and composite frames from leading window contractors because these materials provide good insulation, which helps retain warmth inside the home.

Another critical component is the glass. A special low-emissivity (low-E) coating can be applied to window glass to help reduce heat transfer. This coating blocks a significant portion of infrared and UV rays from entering your home without compromising visible light.

Energy-efficient windows are built with double-paned glass with a spacer in between. The spacer needs to have the right width or the window’s energy efficiency will suffer. The airspace between the panes is filled with an inert gas, like argon or krypton, to decrease the window’s solar heat gain.
