While the best time to clean windows is spring or fall, you may need to do it again once winter arrives. The drop in temperature can make window cleanup a bit more challenging, but the task is still perfectly doable if you know what to do. Today, trusted window replacement company Renewal by Andersen® of Spokane shares some pointers.

- Prepare the cleaning solution. A vinegar-based or alcohol-based solution is great for cleaning windows in cold weather. That’s because vinegar and alcohol not only break down dirt, but also prevent water from freezing and ensure that no spots remain on your windows as they dry. Mix either alcohol or vinegar with water and put them in a spray bottle.
Pro-Tip: Avoid using a window cleaning solution with antifreeze. For starters, it’s harmful to the environment, and using it can damage any plants below your windows. In addition, its fumes aren’t safe to breathe in. Keeping your specialty windows clean in winter may be important, but the task shouldn’t put your health at risk.
- Start cleaning your windows. You’ll want to keep drips and spills to a minimum during window cleanup. That’s why it’s better to use a spray bottle. Doing so allows you to cover the window with the cleaning solution without causing drips. Once the windows are covered, bring a squeegee down the panes starting from the top, wiping from left to right. Make sure to work on one window at a time. Wipe the windows with a clean, lint-free cloth (don’t forget the tight corners and edges) until they’re completely dry.
- Keep your safety and comfort in mind. If your windows have a tilt-in or removable sash, they will be easier to clean. If not, you may need to use a ladder to clean the windows from outside. Make sure to dress warmly for the task, wearing waterproof gloves to protect your hands from the cold. Have someone hold the ladder for you to keep it steady as you clean.
